Downtown Dog Rescue
was founded in 1996 by Modernica General Manager Lori Weise and Plant Manager Richard Tuttlemondo to assist homeless dog owners living on Skid Row. DDR is the only non-profit organization in California, and perhaps in the nation, created to specifically
assist homeless dog owners license, spay/neuter, vaccinate and house their dogs in short or long term boarding.
Each year, DDR adopts over 200 dogs, mostly pit bulls that are rescued from Skid Row, South Central Los Angeles, Watts and Compton. Many of these dogs are considered “unadoptable” when they come into the program. In addition to rescuing, rehabilitating dogs for adoption, DDR hosts free spay/neuter clinics in some of the poorest areas of Los Angeles County, including South Central Los
Angeles, and Compton, providing services for over 1000 dogs per year.
